This post is a paid partnership with Amazon Devices. Opinions and recipes are my own.
If you’ve followed my blog for awhile, you know my love in the kitchen for the Amazon Echo Show. It has been the best Sous-Chef for me in the kitchen throughout the recipe developing process of everything you see on my blog, Instagram and in my upcoming cookbook!
I recently got the new Amazon Echo Show 5 and I really love that it is more compact (yet just as high functioning) and the price is much more affordable at $89.99!
But how does Alexa help me as my Sous-Chef, you ask? Here are some of my most-used commands in my personal kitchen. Of course, there are so many other ways you can use your own Amazon Echo Show, depending on your personal interests and needs in your home, but for me, I really treat it like an-in kitchen entertainment system and Sous-Chef.
Most commonly used commands:
Listening to Music:
Alexa, play The Defined Dish Playlist on Spotify.
As many of you already know, Clayton curates a playlist for the blog on Spotify. It is full of good-vibe music, making it the perfect addition to the kitchen while I’m cooking. I simply say “Alex, Play The Defined Dish Playlist on Spotify.”
Alexa, set my lamb timer for 15 minutes.
Without a doubt my most-used Alexa command is the timer. When there is a lot going on in the kitchen, it is easy to command her to set multiple timers and specify each with what I am cooking, like a ‘lamb timer’ or ‘pasta timer.’ All I ask is, “Alexa, set my sausage timer for 30 minutes,” depending on what I am cooking.
Alexa, how many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?
As far as recipe creating goes, things get a little crazy in the kitchen and I like to know exact measurements so that my readers aren’t confused. Sometimes, I’ll get a little ahead of myself and squeeze the juice of 1/2 a lemon into my recipe, then quickly realize that some people might prefer the exact measurement of that. So I will simply ask questions like, “Alexa, how many tablespoons of juice is in one lemon?” This way, I know if someone is reading my recipe they can easily measure.
Alexa also comes in handy when I am creating new recipes. I may originally think I only need 2 tablespoons of coconut amigos in a recipe, then I end up increasing it to 4 because my taste buds say otherwise. I’ll ask things like, “Alexa, How many tablespoons is in 1/4 cup?” to find out the conversion and make it easier for home cooks to measure!
I could go on and on about how helpful this is! I ask Alexa questions regarding conversions in so many capacities, such as, “Alexa, how many ounces are in 3 pounds? Alexa, how much does an average chicken breast weight? Alexa, how many cups are in an ounce?”
Staying up to date on the News:
Alexa, read me the news.
I never realized how difficult it would be to watch the news once you have young children!Sometimes, I’ll keep it on the TV in the mornings, but then I get barraged with questions about mayhem and war from my sweet 6 year old that I just don’t feel that she is ready to hear. It’s nice to get caught up on a briefing of the news while my kids are still asleep, playing or at school when I am in the kitchen cooking by simply commanding, “Alexa, read me the news.”
Simple Food Questions:
Alexa, how long do I roast broccoli at 400 degrees F?
Along with all of the commands above, you can also ask Alexa the simplest of questions at any time while cooking. When preparing food for my family or a new recipe for my readers, I will ask things like, “Alexa how long do I roast broccoli at 400 degrees F?” or “Alexa, how long should I roast a 3-lb chicken?” This way, I know an average time and can adjust as needed.
Sometimes, I have extra ingredients leftover in my fridge that I want to use up that I don’t want to go to waste, so I will ask Alexa, show me recipes using delicata squash. Or, Show me easy sheet pan recipes. That way, I get some great inspiration for weeknight meals that I might not follow exactly, but it at least inspires me in the kitchen to use the ingredients I already have on hand!
Overall, the Echo Show has so many more valuable capabilities, depending on your interests and needs in your kitchen or home. Here is just how I personally use mine and I love it as an asset in my home kitchen!!
