My Non-Toxic Skincare Routine

Switching over to non-toxic beauty products has been a work in progress for me. I am not the girl that over night was like AHHHHH! My face is going to rot away because my products are toxic AF. No, I am pretty chill about it in fact; however, I did realize I wanted to treat my skin like I do my body. In balance. I fuel my body with clean, nutritious food I’d say… eh, 85% of the time? More or less, depending on the week that is. And we’ve talked before about how these clean eating changes in my diet have changed my life in so many wonderful ways. Over the last year or so I have wanted to incorporate that same mindset towards the products that I use on my skin. Let’s talk about that today!

We all know that your skin is our largest organ, but what does that mean exactly? Our skin holds our bodies together, shielding us from the outside world. It is the first line of defense to anything and everything that we are exposed to. This made me realize that what I put on my body is just as important as what I put in my body, which is why I started looking into non-toxic skincare and beauty products. I want to feed my skin like I do my stomach. I want it to radiate because it is happy with what I am putting on it. I don’t want an artificial, temporary glow.. I want a lifetime of happy skin!

I’ve tried a lot of products, and I will continue to find more I am sure. But I’ve landed on some products that I am obsessed with and when I am obsessed with things, I love sharing them with you all. Today, I am just talking about what I use on my face. Face wash, moisturizers, and masks. That’s all.  I’ve talked a little about clean make-up in the past, and will continue to share with you my finds in that category as I discover new products that I love–  I find clean make-up to be the trickiest because I am super picky about that but luckily, the Green Beauty industry is growing by the minute and I think by next year my entire make-up drawer will be green and clean!

Before I get started with which products I use, let’s talk skin-type. My skin is “sensitive/reactive” aka, if I use a product my face doesn’t like, my eyes puff up like Quasimodo or I break out in hives. Therefore, I am very intimidated by trying out new products. I’ve done lots of research over the last year and tried a handful of products. Here is what I’ve been using and what I ABSOLUTELY love:

Osea Ocean Cleanser — The biggest struggle I had was finding a non-toxic facewash that I loved. I used to always use Kiehls in the past and I loved the way it cleaned my face and it never made my skin flare up; however, I found it’s not the cleanest so I began my hunt for facewash immediately and tried probably 5 different brands before I landed on and fell in love with this Osea Ocean Cleanser. I love all of the Osea products (100% non-toxic, organic, plant-based vegan ingredients) and each one I’ve tried I am a big fan of. The facewash has a light and milky texture, but it actually breaks down the dirt/oils on my face where I feel clean after I wash. I love it!

InstaNatural 100% Organic Rosehip Seed Oil — the name of this product speaks for itself. It’s straight up organic rosehip seed oil… that’s all. No additives, nothing! Out of all the products I recommend today, this is one takes the cake in my favorite product ever. I discovered this product by following The Skinny Confidential and I’ve had it in my bathroom ever since. Their cold-pressed oil is naturally rich in fatty acids (Omega 6, 3, and 9) and Vitamin A to help hydrate the face, skin, hair and nails. Plus, known benefits of Rosehip Oil include hydrating dry skin and visibly reducing the appearance of dark spots, wrinkles and scars to achieve a more youthful and radiant complexion. I use this not only as my nightly moisturizer, but it also is great for removal of caked on eye make-up and hydrating dry ends on hair! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this stuff!

Buca Botanicals Camellia and Rose Face Serum – You’ve heard me talk about this stuff and I will say it again. This stuff is the magic to a dewy, glowing face every. damn. day. Like I mentioned above, Rosehip oil is the love of my life; however, it can feel a little heavy when used under make-up application. This Camellia and Rose serum has a little bit of rosehip in it, but in combination with other magical oils it feels lighter on the skin. When I am wearing makeup, I’ll rub about a dime size drop all over my skin and it makes your foundation more rounded and glowy when you wear it. Plus, it smells heavenly! (Use my code ‘thedefineddish’ for 15% off your serum when you checkout!)

Now, let’s talk the really fun stuff. Face masks. Ah, I love scaring my entire family with a luxurious face mask at night (seriously, I had to start only wearing them after I put the kids to sleep because it actually terrified them). But, honestly, what’s better than watching tv in bed with a face mask on? Uh, nothing. But not all face masks are created equal and sometimes, I think a lot of the ones I’ve purchased in the past just sit on my face for the fun of it. I recently discovered (thanks to Organic Bunny) Kypris Beauty Products. Although I liked their face wash, it really wasn’t worth the money for me; however, THEIR FACE MASKS THOUGH. insanely good! I have two that I use depending on what mood my skin is in. When my skin is looking tired and blah, I use this Kypris Glow Philtre Refining Mask to liven it up. It leaves my skin looking brighter and more glowy after a use of this fabulous stuff. The other one I love is the Kypris Deep Forest Clay Detoxifying & Cleansing Mask. I use this on days where my skin is having a hormonal blemish moment. Yes, these products are on the more expensive side but if you are up to throwing down on a killer face mask, these are the ones!

Speaking of hormonal blemishes (little effers), I love this Osea Corrective Complex. It is an active blend of botanical and essential oils that targets blemishes by removing surface impurities. My favorite thing about this product is the cool, tingly feeling that leaves your skin feeling purified and refreshed! You’ll know what I mean when you use it. Ah…

So, that is really it for today. You’re probably thinking, that’s not that much stuff? To me, with my reactive, sensitive skin.. less is more. I really just use the Osea Face Wash, the Rosehip oil, and the Camellia and Rose Serum on a day-to-day basis. The masks come in when I need an extra pick-me-up and the corrective complex comes in for the giant zit I get on occasion. I also use some fun hydrating sprays that I really like, but those are so easy to find non-toxic and I feel like they are all the same from brand-to-brand so, to me, it wasn’t worth sharing those items. I really only like to share with you the stuff that I AM OBSESSED WITH!

Please note that I will be sharing my hair-care and body-care on a later post. This post is for facial skin-care only, so stay tuned!

What are the non-toxic skincare products that you are obsessed with? Please let me know in the comments below! I love learning about new products from you all so please, share away!!

My sister in law just shared your insta and blog with me as I am looking for gluten free and better recipes etc after doing the blood work food sensitivities test- it’s a journey! Anyway, I’m working opposite of you in that I started cleaning up my skincare, body care and cosmetics and now I’m onto food! Full disclaimer that i am a consultant, but Beautycounter has some amazing products that are safer for you and also highly effective and luxurious. Recently my cosmetic routine was greatly simplified by their five minute face which are six products I love! In addition, I love Naked Bar Soap Co for non toxic deodorant too! Thanks for sharing your likes!

Alex, I am sorry for asking because I know it isn’t a clean product. But what eyeliner did you say was your fave? My eyeliner runs all over my face. YSL…which one? Thanks for all your honesty.

Hi Alex! I was watching your stories last night and you mentioned you had 15% off the Buca line. Did you list that code somewhere that I missed?

Can I ask what nail color you wear frequently? It’s a great neutral that’s almost a nude shade. It looks great!
